I noticed that Gmail mailto hijack recently. Helps me a bit, but I've also thought of another reason to avoid mailto links: Spam. Spambots harvest mailto links and send you all kinds of messages about penis size and erectile disfunction. Makes me cry. Hey Jason, thanks for the comment.

There are tons of Firefox extensions and userscripts that hijack mailto links and use Gmail instead of your desktop app, but even that doesn't help me because I use Gmail Apps For My Domain (or whatever they're calling it now).
